Trophy-Rum-and-Flanigan-l-and-Kramers-r-199x300 Trophy Presentation and Prize Giving Party sponsored by Mount Gay Rum held at the International Yacht and Athletic Club in Newport, RINovember 1, 2012 – Newport, RI – Friday evening at the International Yacht and Athletic Club (IYAC) in Newport, Rhode Island, Dan Flanigan and Max Kramers from Tiverton, Rhode Island were awarded the inaugural Around Jamestown Record trophy and their prize of Mount Gay Rum for setting the outright Around Jamestown Record in 2012. As part of the Record, the yacht that wins the outright record is awarded Mount Gay Rum equal to the Skipper’s weight. On Friday evening, Flanigan was awarded 196 pounds of Mount Gay Rum.

Skipper, Dan Flanigan stated, “We’re thrilled to own the Around Jamestown Record and we’ll definitely be back next year to attempt it again because we are confident we can shave off time from this year’s record.” When asked what he was going to do with all of the Mount Gay Rum, Flanigan said, “Max and I will split it and I have a lot of friends here who I’ll be sharing this with!”

Race Director, Hugh Piggin stated, “The Around Jamestown Record was created with the idea that it will be a community event for all the sailors who spend a great deal of time on Narragansett Bay and I’m excited to see this first year go so well. A few people and organizations were instrumental in getting this Record going; Mount Gay Rum, who is very supportive of yachting, has made this event pretty special. I happen to think winning the Jamestown Record has by far one of the best prizes you can win and I’m thrilled Mount Gay Rum has been supportive from day one. Also, Tom Callahan from Café Zelda was key in helping bring the Record to fruition. And lastly, a big thank you to the IYAC for their hospitality and putting on a great event this evening. We look forward to seeing the yachts out there in 2013 trying to beat Dan and Max’s time.”

On October 9, 2012, Flanigan and Kramers sailed their 18 foot Hobie Tiger around Jamestown with an elapsed time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 24 seconds. Their record will hold until another yacht can best their time. The timeframe to attempt the record in 2013 is from Memorial Day (May 27) until Halloween (October, 31).

The Around Jamestown Record, presented in association with Café Zelda and Mount Gay Rum and is a perpetual all out record for sailing around Conanicut Island (also known as Jamestown) in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. The 2012 record was open from May 28th through October 31st. Similar to other outright speed records, contenders could decide when to make a record attempt and also the direction in which to sail around Jamestown. Therefore, contenders could choose the most advantageous weather conditions and tidal flow in which to attempt the record.

The Around Jamestown Record Trophy will permanently reside between the IYAC and Café Zelda and it will recognize both the current outright record holder and the year-to-year winner.
