MADISON, CT, JUNE 4-5: 2016 brought another successful Joe Manganello Memorial Regatta. Held in memory of renowned Hobie 21 sailor and sailing instructor, this event took place once again at the Madison Surf Club on the waters of Long Island Sound. We were graced with a fine fleet of F18s and open class cats. We must thank all the Volunteers, especially Mrs. Giuliano for hosting such a fine event including a lovely cookout Saturday Night. Of course, this event couldn’t have happened without the fine race committee headed by Jamie Cook.
Saturday brought sunny skies, warm weather, and a light breeze perfect for breaking in the boats for the season. In fact, Jim and Joe won first race by showing excellent speed on their brand new Nacra. It was also nice to see Mike and Greg Ferrara on the water again, each with top finishes on Saturday. The wind died after completing two races Saturday. This left a three-way tie for first.
Sunday brought cloudy skies, but great wind. On the F18s it was full out double trap conditions. The Giuliano Brothers and Todd set out to settle a tie. The rain held off long enough to get in two exciting races full of close crosses and swimming crew. In the end, one has to wonder if it annoys Todd to lose to his old boat. Oh well Todd, there is always next weekend.
The open class had a little battle of its own. Comprised of Hobies, Nacras and even a Dart. The famous Red Rooster (yes, the oldest Hobie 18 on this coast) has taken first place for the last few years. But the Dads (Mr. Presti and Mr. Giuliano) planned on taking advantage of the absence of the Rooster’s regular skipper. Of course, Scott with his 6.0 and its giant spinnaker had other ideas. After weekend of hard sailing on Mr. Presti’s fine Hobie 16 the Dads prevailed, congratulations guys! And of course, they would like to invite any and all catamarans to challenge their title next year.
Happy Sailing,
Pete Giuliano
